Mývatn Birds

Barrow's Goldeneye

A Barrow's Goldeneye with its young on the Laxá river. In addition to its midges, Mývatn is known for its bird populations. About 10,000 breeding pairs of ducks -- representing 15 species -- nest in the area. The lake is the only Icelandic breeding area for the Barrow's Goldeneye, seen above, as well as for the gadwall and the scoter. Red-Throated and Great Northern Divers (Loons), eider ducks, red-breasted mergansers, geese, teals, whimbrels (see below) and other species also call the Mývatn area home for at least part of the year.
