Our two vans at Grjótagjá, with Hverfell in the background.
Our travels around Iceland depended on two Toyota Hi-Ace 4x4 vans. They had seating for eleven people, but the front jump seat wasn't really supposed to be used, and we only used it once or twice. Neither van was filled to capacity, because they also had to carry some of our luggage. We had eight or nine people in each van, though, and things were slightly crowded. The scenery often captured everyone's attention, so we didn't really notice the lack of space. We were fortunate in having Skulí's truck available to carry our really bulky luggage - otherwise we couldn't have made the trip without leaving stuff behind or being REALLY crowded in the vans. The roads in Iceland are quite variable - from paved streets in Reykjavík and other cities, to dirt tracks only passable by 4x4s in the highlands.
